Library
The St. John Elementary Library provides services to all elementary students, staff, and parents connected with our building. Students and staff may also utilize our resources. Students attend library for 30 minutes once a week, but teachers may schedule extra time for research projects, book reports, etc.
Students will learn how to care for a book, where books are located in the library, how to use a shelf marker, how to check out a book, and the importance of returning a book on time. Through stories that will be read by the librarian and through their own reading selections, students will be introduced to a variety of authors, illustrators, and genres. Biography, fable, folktale, fantasy, historical fiction, realistic fiction, science fiction, informational text, poetry, and picture books, are among the genres they will explore.
The students will be introduced to fiction and non-fiction books. They will learn the parts of a book, including the title, author, illustrator, publisher, place of publication, copyright date, table of contents, index, and bibliography. The students will learn how to find a book using the card catalog on the computer by typing in an entry and then clicking on author, subject, title, or keyword. We have approximately 9,500 books in circulation, both fiction and non-fiction. We have seven computers that replaced the card catalogue. The computers can access the Internet and be used for research. One computer with Internet access is connected to the T. V. for instructional use and an Elmo document camera as well. Students will become familiar with the library layout, and are able to locate their book selections using the Dewey Decimal system.
The objective of these experiences with books is to help instill in the students a life long love of reading.
