The Services Provided by the Reading Room
Orton-Gillingham Program:
A multi-sensory approach to teaching reading with a strong emphasis on phonics. This program is for the sudent who struggles with the mechanics of reading.
Letter/Sound Association is addressed. Blending sounds together to decode words, as well as the use of finger-spellling to spell ohonetically-spelled words. Arm-tapping is used to spell non-phonetic words.
This program caters to the various "learning styles" of students. Each new concept is explored using visual, auditory. kinesthetic drills. Eventually, the reading process becomes automatic.
Syllable types and Spelling Rules are taught to make the Reading and Writing Processes easier to understand.
Review and Reinforcement Program:
It provides students with an extra exposure to their classroom "Story of the Week", from their reading series. Practice reading the story aloud, along with plenty discussion of the story, provides more familiarity of the story, as well as confidence of the student.
Advanced Program:
An opportunity to read "above grade level" books. Designed for students who need a challenge.
