St. John Elementary School
Parish

St. John the Evangelist ChurchSt. John the Evangelist Parish is a growing and vibrant community because of the activities and participation of its members. The intent of this web page is to make you aware of the wide variety of these activities that we might encourage greater involvement in our life and mission.

St. John's Parish has something for everyone from the youngest child to the testing, doubting teenager, to the settled retiree. We offer a wide range of activities for all.

For the youth of the parish there are several different activities based on age. For the very young we offer day care during the 10:30 A.M. Mass on Sunday mornings. This gives mom and dad a chance to pray and attend Mass without interruption. From the time the child is 3 years old they can attend Religious Education classes on Sunday mornings, from 13:30 A.M. to 11:45 A.M. at St. John Elementary School. These classes are for children from pre-school age until eighth grade. Not only do these classes offer preparation for the Sacraments but they also build friendships within the parish community. All children either in Religious Education or those attend St. John Elementary School are prepared for the Sacraments. First Eucharist is in the second grade. First Reconciliation is in the second grade, and in seventh and eighth grades the children prepare for Confirmation. With each of these Sacraments come special preparation and celebration. We, at St. John's believe that each Sacrament is a building block in your child's faith development, so we celebrate each occasion as a parish family. The Sacrament of First Eucharist takes place the first Saturday in May each year. The students begin preparation in September, and continue to prepare with prayer services and a one-day retreat. It is during this retreat that the children make the "famous" St. John bread. One of the most vivid memories of the retreat is watching Grandma's Bread and smelling you own loaf baking.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation and First Communion is completed in the second grade. The students again attend a retreat in the evening with their parents, which builds not only the faith development but also a family-building time. This Sacrament is celebrated in December each year. The children are given a small reception after the sacrament, to show that we are a family welcoming back the member who drifted away. The Sacrament of Confirmation is a two-year preparation sacrament. In the seventh grade the students are introduced to church history, and take the first step to becoming an adult Catholic. The seventh graders participate in a Lock-In, 7 P.M. - 7 A.M. During this time the students experience some new enlightenment within their faith along with a lot of fun and entertainment. In eighth grade the students take the final steps in becoming an adult Catholic. Comfirmation is always held in the Fall. The date is determined each year by the Bishop. You may call Mrs. Colleen Snyder DRE for information 784-5746.

St. John's parish welcomes the more mature parishioners with activities of their own. We offer a friendship club, which provides companionship for those who have lost a spouse.

For the parishioner in between the Religious Ed. Years and the Golden Years we offer a wide selection of activities to meet everyone's ability. We have First Friday Adoration which takes place from 10:00 A.M.to 3:00 P.M.the First Friday of the month. This special adoration to the Blessed Sacrament is a beautiful way to pray and feel close to our Lord. We provide funeral dinners for the family of every person in the parish who passes away. This simple act of bringing a dish for others to enjoy shows that we are a family that mourns and rejoices together.

In looking at a Parish that will fulfill all of your spiritual needs along with your need for friendships St. John the Evangelist is your parish. Once you step inside the parish doors for the first time experience the warmth of the liturgy and the friendliness of the people, you will know that you have found a home.
