Welcome to St. John Kindergarten! From social to academic skills, our Kindergarten program encourages positive individual success while focusing on Christian values. We build positive self-esteem and confidence in each child’s ability enabling them to learn and grow at their own pace reaching their fullest potential.
Math: The Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley Mathematics is the math series
used at the Kindergarten level. Through hands-on manipulatives, math concept skills are introduced, explored and mastered by the Kindergartners. Concept skills introduced include: sorting/classifying,; graphing and patterns; number recognition, number concepts and number writing skills; measurement; time (o’clock) and money (penny, nickel, dime); shapes and fractions (equal parts, halves, fourths), number counting: 1-100, 2-20, 5-100, 10-100; and an introduction to simple addition and subtraction.
Early Reading/Phonics: Our Scott Foresman Reading program meets the needs of our Kindergartners by building reading and language skills. Skills introduced in our reading series include: daily reading, comprehension, oral language/vocabulary development, listening skills, phonics and early writing. A phonics workbook coincides with each weekly unit and introduced alphabet letter.
Alpha Time Letter People/Puppets: This is an excellent hands-on introductory phonics program, used to reinforce our Reading series. One Letter Friend (puppet)
is introduced weekly so the children are able to master all 26-alphabet letters and their associated sounds.
Manuscript Writing: All 26 upper/lower case letters are introduced focusing on proper letter size, formation and letter spacing. This will be encouraged in the
writing of their names and other writing/copying exercises.
Religion: The Religion series, “Come, Follow Me” (Benziger), introduces a weekly theme focusing on Christian values. Themes include: our families and friends; God’s gifts of creation; an introduction to the Bible and prayer; our five senses; and special holidays. Our patron saint for Kindergarten this school year is St. Francis Assisi. Social Studies and Science are incorporated within our Religion lessons.
