St. John Elementary School
History

St. John School in 1873St. John School opened its doors to two hundred pupils on September 15, 1873. Four sisters provided their teaching services from the Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary an order from Monroe, Michigan. The school was the first Catholic school in the community and grew quickly. In 1892, the first graduating class of St. John High School received their diplomas. All of this growth and excitement within the parish and school came through the beloved leadership of Rev. Father Theophilus Buyse. He guided the parish for twenty-four years and died in 1895. His successor, Rev. Father CM. Schenkelberg placed an emphasis on educational excellence and success and dedicated himself to the erection of an excellent three-story sandstone and brick building to be known for the next half century as St. John Academy.

In 1955 and 1959, the parish saw its last two school building projects. St. John High School's new building was dedicated on November 5, 1955 and later in 1959 because of growth needs an elementary addition was attached to the new high school with fifteen classrooms to house the expanding elementary population.
